Mac OS X

BatChmod (10.5 or later)  — BatChmod is a Cocoa utility written by Renaud Boisjoly for manipulating file and folder privileges in Mac OS X. It allows the manipulation of ownership, as well as the privileges associated to the Owner, Group, or others. BatChmod also forces emptying Trash from its dock icon. (Free to use; donations accepted by the author.)

Battery Health (10.7.4 or later)  — Battery Health is the most comprehensive tool for gaining vital information about your MacBook's battery, such as current charge level, battery capacity, power usage, temperature, charge cycles, and much more. (Freeware; additional features available for purchase.)

Caffeine (10.4 or later)  — A tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen, or starting screen savers. Click it again to go back. Hold down the Command key while clicking to show the menu. (Freeware.)

Classic Menu (10.4 or later)  — Classic Menu's apple menu brings back the functionality of the apple menu in the Mac OS. It displays the icons and names of files and folders in the Classic Menu items folder and allows up to five levels of hierarchial menus for folder contents. The unlicensed version is fully functional but occasionally displays a reminder to purchase a license. (Free to use; $10 to disable pop-up registration reminders.)

CoPyCat (10.4 or later)  — The cross-platform Cartesian document image viewer&nsbp;- available for Mac OS 8, 9, and X, as well as several other operating systems! (Freeware.)

Easy Find for Mac (10.5 or later; PPC compatible)  — EasyFind is an alternative to or supplement of Spotlight and finds files, folders, or contents in any file without the need for indexing. This is especially useful if you are tired of slow or impossible indexing, outdated or corrupted indices or if you are just looking for features missing in the Finder or Spotlight. (Freeware.)

FinderPop (10.4 to 10.10; also available for OS 8 and 9) — FinderPop vastly improves the Mac OS' contextual menus by allowing you to access them just by holding down the mouse key, rather than holding down the control key and mouse together. In addition, with FinderPop, you can now navigate through four layers of your mounted volumes from within contextual menus, as well as quickly reveal any pop-up windows on the desktop. CURRENTLY NOT COMPATIBLE FOR EL CAPITAN. (Freeware.)

Jumpcut (10.1 and later) — Jumpcut is an application that provides "clipboard buffering" — that is, access to text that you've cut or copied, even if you've subsequently cut or copied something else. The goal of Jumpcut's interface is to provide quick, natural, intuitive access to your clipboard's history. (Freeware.)

MediaCentral (10.6 or later) — MediaCentral turns your Mac into the ultimate home theater system. With support for numerous audio, video, IP TV, TV, IP radio, games, and multimedia formats, MediaCentral brings it all together at the push of a button. ($37.99.)

Paparazzi! (versions available for 10.3 or later) — Paparazzi! is a small utility for Mac OSX that makes screenshots of webpages. (Freeware; donations accepted by the author.)

Peek-a-Boo (10.7 or later) — A utility to monitor and manipulate all running processes. You can watch and adjust how much CPU time each process uses. You can view any piece of information available through the Process Manager, sorting processes by a variety of attributes. ($8.99; available through the App Store.)

PiXel Check (10.6.8 or later) — PiXel Check is an application that assists you in visually inspecting your LCD for bad or "dead" pixels. (Freeware.)

QuickErase (10.4 or later) — QuickErase is a helpful aid application for erasing a CDs/DVDs in the Finder. Different than other CD/DVD-erase applications, QuickErase has been developed especially for the use in the toolbar within a Finder window. (Freeware.)

Savvy Clipboard (10.3.9 or later; PPC compatible) — A handy tool that adds multiple Clipboard capability to Mac OS X. Do you often copy things and paste them to other locations? Would you like to retain what you copied before, and be able to use those items again, or save them to disk? Savvy Clipboard will remember what you copied, and store those data items for you. ($14.99; available through the App Store.)

Singular — Singular helps you to find and remove duplicate files on your Mac. Drop files & folders on its window or its Dock icon, choose files with the open panel, it makes no difference: it finds duplicate files, shows you the results and lets you move them to the Trash just in a click of the mouse. (Currently in public beta.)

SteerMouse (10.4 or later)  — SteerMouse is a mouse driver that lets you freely customize buttons, wheels and cursor speed. Both USB and Bluetooth mice are supported, no matter whether the mouse is designed for Windows or Mac. ($20.00; includes a 30-day trial with full functionality.)

SuperDuper! (10.4.11 or later, older versions available) — From the source itself: "...the wildly acclaimed program that makes recover painless, because it makes creating a fully bootable backup painless." Works on both Intel and Power PC-based Macs! (Free to download and use; $27.95 for advanced features.)

Swift Publisher (10.8.5 or later) — Publishing good looking and informative documents for business, social and home activities becomes easy. ($29.95 for a single user; additional licenses and download available.)

TenFourFox (10.4 and 10.5) — Picking up support for older OS X machines that Firefox dropped like a hot skillet, TenFourFox is a modern solution for those who love their Power Macs but don't want to shell out big bucks for an Intel machine. (Freeware.)

TigerLaunch (10.1 or later) — TigerLaunch is an easy-to-use and easy-to-configure application launcher for OS X. It displays an Apps menu at the top of your screen listing all your applications in alphabetical order - no matter what folder they appear in.You can easily configure it to exclude applications you rarely or never launch. (Freeware.)

TinkerTool (versions available for 10.1 and later) — TinkerTool is an application that gives you access [...] to activate hidden features in the operating system and in some of the applications delivered with the system. (Freeware.)

World Clock Deluxe (10.6 or later) — MaBaSoft World Clock CSM is a multi-time clock. It displays your local time, Universal, Greenwich time (UTC), or the current time in a city belonging to a different time zone. Up to 23 frequently used cities can be saved in World Clock Deluxe. Different time formats and display options are available. ($19.00 to $950.00, depending on license.)


Legacy Systems (OS 9 & Earlier)

ClipS — ClipS is a control strip module that is just the thing to have for making clippings from a progam that is not drag and drop aware. ClipS enables you to create clipping files with most all software. This version is OS-8.5.1 compatible. (Freeware; direct download.)

Decor — Decor is a small application and extension pair which will place a chosen PICT, GIF, JPEG/JFIF, or startup screen file on your desktop in OS versions before OS 8.0. You can also designate a folder from which to randomly choose the background picture. To change a picture on the fly, just drag and drop the new image on top of the Decor icon. Also supports tiling, scaling, and cropping of selected images. Cool, huh? (Freeware; direct download.)

Gravité — Gravité makes Macintosh drag-and-drop look and feel more like the real thing. When Gravité is installed, dragged items (Finder icons, image clips) behave according to laws of mechanics such as gravity, inertia, and friction. (Freeware.)

I Love Native — I Love Native! is an application which allows you to check whether a program or a code resource file was written in PowerPC, 68K, or Fat (both PowerPC and 68K) code. I Love Native! is capable of checking applications, control panels, system extensions, and shared libraries. (Freeware; discontinued.)

Net-Print (OS 7 through 9) — Net-Print lets you highlight text and then print or save that text and only that text. It also lets you combine multiple chunks of text to print or save. If you want to quickly print out a label for a Zip Disk, Net-Print will do that, too. (Shareware, $10.00.)

SimpleText Color Menu — SimpleText Color Menu is a drag-and-drop utility that installs an extra cool Color menu and an extra useful Goodies menu inside Apple's SimpleText text editor. This utility now works with all versions of SimpleText. (Shareware, $10.00; direct download.)

Snitch v2.6.5 — This is a favorite utility for editing file type and creator settings. It's convenient to use: you access it simply by selecting Get Info as you normally would. And it offers at least as many features as any other competing utility. Version 2.6 is Mac OS 8.5 compatible. (Shareware, $10)

SoundApp — SoundApp can play or convert files dropped onto it in a variety of formats. In addition, it supports Play Lists which are lists of sound files that can be saved for later usage. Files in a Play List can be played or converted as a group or individually. SoundApp supports a randomized shuffle playback mode and repeated playback of Play Lists. (Freeware.)

SpellTools 1.3.3 — SpellTools gives you a suite of text tools available to virtually all your applications. Tools like Prooflistening, rubber stamps, and text cleanup tools in addition to a powerful spell checker engine. SpellTools works with nearly every application you own because it is an application, not an extension or control panel. Therefore, it will not conflict with other things in your System Folder. It is encoded FAT binary, so it works extremely well on older 68K Macs, as well as taking full advantage of the speed capabilities of PowerPC processors. (Freeware.)

µZak — A utility for playing the sound tracks of QuickTime Movies. Just drag the icon of some QuickTime movies, some folders containing QuickTime movies, or even the icon of your hard-disk on µZak, and enjoy the music. (Freeware; direct download.)

SonnetTech FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter — Use your existing FireWire® 400 cables with this FireWire adapter from Sonnet to connect FireWire 400 devices to a FireWire 800 port, without going through the trouble of purchasing yet another cable. Just plug it in between a FireWire 800 port and a standard FireWire 400 cable's 6-pin male connector (the other end of the FW400 cable plugs into your FireWire device). It can't get any simpler. ($14.95.)

Blockhead — According to TechRadar's Darren Allan, "This is the MacBook charger Apple should have made." Blockhead is a power adapter (Pre-order status, shipments start in April, 2016; $19.95 each or $34.95 for two.)
